Travel with the kids, not for the kids.

Disney is an OK destination, if it’s free.

Disney just announced that you can get into Walt Disney World or Disneyland theme parks on your birthday for free during 2009.

With tickets for those 10 and over $75 and those 3-10 getting the whopping discount price of $63, this savings would pay for a few meals, or even a night or two in a Kissimmee hotel.

I lived in Florida when Walt Disney World opened in the midst of swamps & lakes surrounding the little town of Orlando.  The Florida-resident discounts were more of a bargain than today, so, we spent quite a few weekends at the Magic Kingdom.  I have warm memories of those visits – riding the monorail, the tea cups, watching my uncle get sick on Space mountain, and It’s a Small World.

I cried when I heard It’s a Small World was closing for renovations.  My father on the other hand, if he were alive, would probably throw a party.  Though, he may wish it stayed the same so I could experience taking my own daughter on it 10 times in a row and being tormented with “It’s a small world after all…” running through my head for the rest of eternity.  Thankfully, songs don’t stick in my head.  My husband on the other hand…….

Here are some details from the press release:
To receive free admission to one of the Walt Disney World or Disneyland theme parks on your birthday in 2009, guests must bring valid ID including proof of birth date. Guests who already hold a valid multi-day ticket they will use on their birthday may choose from other birthday treats instead, however, no cash refunds or credits will be given. To register your birthday and find out more details, visit www.disneyparks.com.

We went to Disney World when I was in high school, and Epcot was very new. I was more impressed with Epcot than the Magic Kingdom.

We’ve already prepped our kids that Disney will probably not be in their futures. There are so many more interesting, less crowded places that we can go while spending much less money.

I have to admit that Disney isn’t my favorite destination. But this might make a trip to Florida in February worthwhile!

My parents took me to Disney before high school and we had a great experience at Epcot. It is an ok way to introduce children to different culture if you can’t travel to those countries themselves.

It’s funny. I am not planning a Disney vacation anytime soon, but it is amazing the warm memories it evokes. We will definitely stop by if we are visiting friends & family in Florida or on a SoCal road trip. But, the San Diego zoo will come before Disneyland I am afraid.
