Photo Friday – Low Tables

Mirielle asleep at Cafe Wayan (with ginger tea and coconut cream pie.)

One of the most wonderful parental discoveries in Bali was the beauty of dining at a low table with a toddler. Found throughout Asia, diners sit on mats and often pillows.  Closing in on Mirielle’s bedtime, she became cranky (mild description). As we were on vacation, we did not want to cut our evenings short. I discovered if I laid her out on a pillow next to me, she would fall peacefully asleep. Jack & I then enjoyed drinks, dessert, tea and even a show one evening.

This photo was taken at Cafe Wayan in Ubud, Bali. (Fantastic enough to get a separate review soon.) Mirielle was sound asleep. On the table is ginger tea which I became a huge fan of on this trip. (Just steep fresh shaved ginger in hot water.) The pie is an award-worthy coconut cream pie from the restaurant’s bakery.

Note: I am participating in DeliciousBaby’s super cool Photo Fridays, where everyone is invited to link to a travel photo. Please click here to see more of this week’s photos & stories.

    Oh how sweet!
Low tables are fabulous for sleepy toddlers.
My kids have fallen asleep at so many restaurants in so many places. My younger son even fell asleep while eating once after a busy day at Disneyland.
    Happy travelling :)

I just clipped a picture of a low table (for our house). I like the idea anyway for a more chill dining experience for Jeff and me, but the toddler connection hadn’t hit me yet.

    P.S. I love your blog.

    Cute photo! :)

The ginger tea sounds yummy. I always think the ginger tea I’ve found here tastes too harsh, although it’s good to drink if you’ve got a nasty cold.

You know, I admire you for this. I never tried anything flexible like letting my kids fall asleep in a restaurant, but instead have done things like invited family or friends to travel with us so that I have someone to babysit (or skipped going out altogether).

I’d love a piece of that pie right now! Coconut is my favorite.

For some reason pics of our kids sleeping on vacation are among our favorites too. There’s something extra special about seeing your kids asleep in a different environment. I’m not sure whether its because they look so innocent, or because we just remember that sense of relief that there isn’t any yelling ;)
